Classrooms - Grades 7 & 8
The seventh and eighth grade curriculum at Grace Lutheran School is designed to prepare students for high school. Our departmentalized schedule gives the students an opportunity to see five different teachers throughout the day, allowing the students to receive a well-rounded, Christ-centered education including both academics and extracurricular activities.
The religion curriculum, alternating yearly between Old Testament and New Testament overviews, not only looks at Biblical facts but also stresses an application to the daily lives of the students. The students are actively involved in the weekly memorization of Bible verses and Luther’s Small Catechism.
The science and social studies curricula also allow for combining the grades and annually alternating topics. This allows us to provide new challenges each year even though the students are in the same classroom. Social studies alternates between American and world history. The science curriculum allows students to study life science one year and earth science in the alternate year. The science curriculum also includes hands-on laboratory activities.
The math curriculum is designed to have students ready to enter algebra when they reach the ninth grade. Fifth grade math finishes the program begun in the first grade. The sixth and seventh grade math classes prepare the students for pre-algebra in the eighth grade.
The language arts curriculum emphasizes grammatical usage. It also includes the study of novels and an opportunity to write a play. Throughout the year the students also present speeches and write creative stories. Spelling lessons are assigned as a weekly supplement to the language arts curriculum.
Computer class is held in the networked computer lab. The lab provides Internet access and printing capabilities on all computers. The class covers a wide variety of computer usage topics and gives a broad overview of many computer programs. The eight grade class finishes their school experience at Grace by creating their very own graduation video which is presented at the graduation reception.
Students participate in physical education twice a week on alternate days and attend art class at the end of each week. The art program provides a broad overview of different forms of art. Physical education is designed to provide opportunities to learn to play many different sports, to promote teamwork, and to enjoy athletics regardless of ability. We also have music classes twice each week. Throughout the year the students perform at special church services, and also participate in the Spring Concert which is presented for the enjoyment of friends and family.
Miss Ariel Wald
7th - 8th Grade Homeroom
3rd - 8th Grade Science
4K - 8th Grade Computer Classes
Since Ms. Wald teaches science and computer classes, she is a very hands-on teacher. Her enthusiasm for science is contagious, and she tries to do experiments once a week with the students. She loves doing edible and messy projects, like using ice cream sundaes to show how the different layers of earth come together or using paint on speakers so that the students can not only hear sound but see it move. Ms. Wald also enjoys playing games with her students to help them learn key vocabulary; she is a huge believer in motion in the classroom.
Our computer lab thrives under Ms. Wald’s tutelage, and her favorite tools are: Google Apps-Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides, which she utilizes to help students with cross-curricular projects. She also uses the following sites in the lab:
> Sumdog - Interactive game that improves student’s math skills from grades 3rd-8th
> Hour of Code - Introduces computer coding to students with fun interactive games
> Kahoot - Interactive review game for all subjects
> KidBlog - Safe site for students to blog about various topics
> ABCYA - Site for grades K-3 that has games to improve computer skills along with integrating math, science, and English.
> Typing Web - Tracks student’s progress in each lesson which enhances their accuracy and speed for typing.
She is a 2013 Concordia, WI graduate and holds a degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in environmental science. Outside of her classroom, Ms. Wald helps with our middle school youth group, student council, Sunday School, and helps coach volleyball and track
While finishing school and doing her student teaching, Jeremiah 29:11 became one of Ms. Wald’s favorite verses. God’s good plans led her to Grace, and we feel blessed to have her on staff.
